Here's a question for [info]paula_angela and [info]cjander: how the fuck did Stella Kariofyllidis manage to get back on an ALP ticket for this year's council elections?

For everyone else's benefit, she lost in 2004 following some "interesting" electoral practices and this.

[info]cjander, I'd vote for you if I was still in the South Ward.

The power has been cut in my street twice in the last 24 hours. For about an hour this time yesterday and for just long enough to take out the server a short while ago.

I'm not a hundred percent certain, but it seems that the power cut was at about the same time as last night. I really hope this doesn't become a regular thing. Yes, I know I need to get a UPS, but then at the rate things are going I'll need to install a fucking diesel generator under the house!

I've mentioned before that I have awesome landlords, it helps that they're friends. Tonight I've been asked whether or not to allow an election sign for the party to which they're both members to be erected in my front yard during the forthcoming election. The sign is, of course, for the Loyal Opposition, not the Party in Power.

My view in favour of agreeing is to do whatever it takes to oppose the Coalition. My view against is a strong encouragement to not blindly and blithely follow anyone presenting themselves as a leader.

Not that the presence of the sign, or its lack would change the way I'd vote. So it seems to me that the question should be opened up to the denizens LiveJournal and Blogland.

Should I have a pro-ALP sign in my front yard for this year's Federal Election?

Two firetrucks just went past my house and I was a more than a little surprised to see them turn the nearest corner. I could see they weren't going to the house right next door. So I figured there was a 50% chance they may have been going to the house of a colleague.

It turns out this is not the case. It appears there's a decent sized fire in the park/golf driving range over my back fence. Given the distance and the size of the fire it looks like it's consuming a clump of trees a few hundred metres from here.

I also wasn't the only one in the street to go and take a quick peek, but it was way too cold out there to watch for too long. A view that appeared to be shared by those few who also ventured out.

Someone in my street has a pair of dogs which have not been locked in their yard properly, so now they're tormenting the little yappy thing my next door neighbour keeps. At least they can't get into her yard.

Still, for the first time since moving in last December I've had to close my front gate just to prevent them getting into my yard and maybe even scaring Crystal. For the first time I see the genuine value in keeping something like a .22 calibre rifle, if only to play the role of Atticus Finch.

Although it would be easier to get the Council to deal with it than to jump through the hoops necessary to get a gun. Not to mention considerably cheaper.
